The Benefits of Tyrosine Amino Acid
Supplements for Bodybuilders and Athletes

Tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid produced naturally by your body from other amino acids. Recent studies shown that tyrosine enhances certain neurological functions. One day it may prove useful in the treatment of depression.

However, any athletic performance benefits of tyrosine usage are subjective at best.  To date, nothing has proven Tyrosine to be an effective performance enhancer in any scientifically valid studies.  This does not mean that it is useless for bodybuilders and athletes.  Their have been reports of fatigue reduction and many athletes swear by its usefulness.

The issue with tyrosine is not whether it is important or not for the athlete. Clearly, this amino is crucial because deficiencies can lead to chronic fatigue, poor metabolism, depression, anxiety, attention disorders, and could decreased muscle fitness.

But, is tyrosine supplements are helpful? The body makes its own tyrosine quite effectively, so some argue that taking supplements of phenylalanine, which is the essential amino acid that the body uses to generate tyrosine, is all that is needed to ensure that plenty of tyrosine is available to take care of all of its functions.

Tyrosine Is Very Important To The Proper
Functioning Of The Central Nervous System

Tyrosine supplements have been used, in combination with other drugs, to treat conditions such as depression, migraine headaches, and Parkinson's disease. Shortages of this amino have also been linked to chronic fatigue syndrome, some forms of sexual dysfunction, and certain kinds of allergies.

As indicated earlier, claims that tyrosine has benefits for healthy athletes and bodybuilders have not been substantiated. However, many who have used tyrosine claim to notice an increase in energy and alertness. This possibly is related to the neurological enhancing properties of tyrosine.

Tyrosine Allegedly Helps Raise Serotonin Levels In The Brain

High levels are Serotonin lead to states of mental alertness and increased energy. tyrosine may promote the production of hormones that boost energy levels, and tyrosine may have some energy enhancing properties of its own. There simply has not been enough research done into the performance enhancing benefits of tyrosine to draw any firm conclusions at this point.

It is clear that the jury is still out on whether or not bodybuilders and other athletes can reap performance gains by supplementing the amino acid tyrosine. Since the human body creates it naturally, it seems likely that the positive effects can be gained by supplementing with other amino acids, in particular Phenylalanine, which is used by the body to fabricate tyrosine. The benefits of tyrosine are still under scientific investigation and we will likely know more about this amino acid in the near future.
