Chromium Picolinate Side Effects & Research Study

Chromium picolinate side effects, Before we discuss the possibilities, I'll provide you a short explanation on it. Chromium is an essential mineral found in many foods. Some people consider that synthetic chromium supplements such as chromium picolinate (a mixture of the mineral chromium and picolinic acid) can essentially help your body control blood sugar levels.

I am glad to inform you that in approximately one billion doses taken since chromium picolinate have been on the market there have been no major confirmed chromium picolinate side effects. But studies have noted infrequent reports of irregular heartbeats with chromium picolinate use.

Some minor chromium picolinate side effects have rarely been reported. Such as changes in sleep patterns, including insomnia and increased dream activity.

Another minor chromium picolinate side effects reported is irritability. Since chromium supplements may change the way your body regulates blood sugar levels, your may want to talk to a doctor before using it if you have diabetes or use insulin.

Chromium Piccolinate Research

Dietary Supplements for Body-Weight Reduction: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Compliance with conventional weight-management programs is notoriously poor, and a plethora of over-the-counter slimming aids are sold with claims of effectiveness.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to assess the evidence from rigorous clinical trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses on the effectiveness of dietary supplements in reducing body weight.

DESIGN: The research was a systematic review. Literature searches were conducted on Medline, Embase, Amed, Cinahl, and the Cochrane Library until March 2003. Hand searches of medical journals, the authors' own files, and bibliographies of identified articles were conducted. There were no restrictions regarding the language of publication. The screening of studies, selection, validation, data extraction, and the assessment of methodological quality were performed independently by the two reviewers. To be included, trials were required randomized and double blind. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses of dietary supplements were included if they were based on the results of randomized, double-blind trials.

RESULTS: 5 systematic reviews and meta-analyses and 25 additional trials were included and reviewed. Data on the following dietary supplements were identified: chitosan, chromium picolinate, Ephedra sinica, Garcinia cambogia, glucomannan, guar gum, hydroxy-methylbutyrate, plantago psyllium, pyruvate, yerba mate, and yohimbe. The reviewed studies provide some encouraging data but no evidence beyond a reasonable doubt that any specific dietary supplement is effective for reducing body weight. The only exceptions are E. sinica- and ephedrine-containing supplements, which have been associated with an increased risk of adverse events.

CONCLUSIONS: The evidence for most dietary supplements as aids in reducing body weight is not convincing. None of the reviewed dietary supplements can be recommended for over-the-counter use.

My Take on Chromium Picolinate Side Effects

One word of caution that you need to be aware of that involves another research conducted at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 1999. It seemed they reported that chromium picolinate had apparently damaged DNA in living cells in test tube studies and speculated that the supplements could potentially increase the risk of cancer. However, the risk of getting cancer from using it couldn't be fully understood without long-term studies.

So what is my take on this supplement? I think that taking extra chromium picolinate or adding chromium supplements to your diet is not the answer to weight loss. The main reason I use chromium picolinate is to curb the craving for sweets. For this reason, the supplement works well. That's all!

Here's a great deal for Higher Power Chromium, 1000mcg/100 Capsules.
